CCWA for the Kids: Buckeyethon 2020

Imagine hundreds of students coming together to pursue a common cause. Dancing, friends, and a shared sense of community— what’s not to love? Such a spectacle was exactly the scene on February 7-8, 2020, when CCWA participated in the BuckeyeThon Dance Marathon in order to raise funds for pediatric cancer and hematology care.

CCWA’s BuckeyeThon efforts started in October and lasted through February. One of the team’s first events was attending the annual BuckeyeThon Fashion Night at Easton Town Center. While some merchants donated their proceeds toward BuckeyeThon’s overall fundraising total, this event was a fantastic opportunity for members of the CCWA BuckeyeThon team to get to know each other and to explore one of Columbus’s hotspots. October 22-23 saw the annual Day of Miracles, when individual team members made their first fundraising push. In addition to individual outreach efforts throughout the year, CCWA’s BuckeyeThon team furthered their earnings by hosting a fundraiser at Blaze Pizza, a trivia night, and a bake sale.

On the morning of February 8, CCWA’s team members who had fundraised at least $250 gathered at the Ohio Union for a day chock-full of fun activities. In true CCWA fashion, the team made a beeline toward trivia after attending Opening Ceremonies. In one of the Dance Marathon’s most memorable events, the emcee hosting trivia asked CCWA if “we were the history club or something” because we had been very excited to answer a question about the United Nations. Throughout the day, CCWA busted some moves at silent disco and Rave Hour; played putt-putt, spikeball, bubble soccer, and several rounds of gaga ball; and made cards for the kids being treated at Nationwide’s Children’s Hospital. Overall, BuckeyeThon fundraised a cumulative $1,606,087.99, of which CCWA was responsible for $7,195.97!

Serving as one of CCWA’s BuckeyeThon Team Captains was a very rewarding experience. While the Dance Marathon was a thrilling experience, the reason we dance is to make a difference: our fundraising efforts will go a long way toward saving children’s lives. I am exceedingly proud of our team for setting our new fundraising record at over $7,000.00 and cannot wait to see what we do next year!
