Ok, Georgetown!
In mid-October and with fall in full swing, CCWA travelled to Washington, D.C. to compete at the annual National Collegiate Security Conference (NCSC) hosted by Georgetown’s International Relations Association. This year marks CCWA’s third year in attendance at NCSC, but the conference is quickly becoming a go-to for the team, as NCSC consistently runs some of the most well-staffed and engaging committees on the circuit.
CCWA delegates competed in an array of exciting committees including both General Assembly and Crisis style simulations. From the 1984 Argentine Cabinet to the 1977 United Nations Council on Water, OSU delegates collaborated with universities across the circuit to write *comprehensive* working papers. Furthermore, delegates in crisis committees fabricated chaotic arcs to seize power in Argentina, or take over the security infrastructure of the European Union. Highlights of the trip included eating Whole Foods for every meal (literally, every single meal), visiting the monuments at night, and having frequent vibe checks (in case you were wondering: vibes were good).
Piper and Kathleen had the unique opportunity of competing as a double delegation in the United Nations Security Council committee for the first time and were excited to learn the mechanics of a new committee style, which employed both Crisis and GA elements. While the committee passed only two directives the entire weekend and the chair refused to acknowledge their self-appointed veto power as the Federal Republic of Germany, they enjoyed creating a secure cybersecurity and social media platform (DEUtube) and preventing multiple terrorist attacks, most of which were started by the Delegation of France and other P5 members of the Security Council (Germany for P5 2020?). The Honorable Delegates of the Federal Republic of Germany thoroughly enjoyed being the only delegates in committee who were actively trying to combat terrorism, as opposed to promoting it even though that was the whole point of the committee. Regardless, the committee was a great experience, and Piper and Kathleen would like to thank their Chairs (shoutout Chase we miss you) and crisis staff for a well-run committee and a wonderful first -but hopefully not last- UNSC.
Overall, the CCWA delegation had a wonderful time at NCSC and cannot wait to return next year.
Best friends Piper Womelsdorf and Kathleen Fink would like to congratulate each other on their hard-earned verbal commendation in the United Nations Security Council. We couldn’t have done it without each other. More importantly, we would like to congratulate ourselves for winning multiple superlatives in committee, including “most likely to be gluten free”, “most likely to veto”, “most likely to fight terrorism” and “most likely to be sisters haha wait are you?” We should have gotten the gavel, but don’t worry- we’ll be back for more.
- Piper Womelsdorf (Head Delegate) and Kathleen Fink (Director of Membership)
P.s. OK GEORGETOWN!
