Meet the MUN Council
Welcome, one and all, to the first ever CCWA MUN Council! The MUN Council is responsible for coordinating all things MUN at OSU. Learn who our members are and why they do what they do:
Head delegate
Name: Piper Womelsdorf
Year: Third
Major(s): International Relations & Diplomacy
Minor(s): Arabic, Geography
Favorite MUN Conference: My favorite MUN conference is PUNC, hosted by our friends at Penn State!
Favorite Committee: My favorite style of committee is specialized agencies, but my favorite committee experience is when I performed an exorcism on someone as part of my crisis arc at PUNC 2019.
Why Do You Love MUN: I love MUN because it has given me so many exciting opportunities to travel, meet people from around the world, and learn about global issues.
Deputy of Crisis Training
Name: Ian Shotts
Year: Second-ish
Major(s): International Studies: Relations and Diplomacy
Minor(s): Spanish
Favorite MUN Conference: Idk, but it’s definitely not NCSC
Favorite Committee: If we pretend MUN is coffee, Crisis is the coffee beans. Inseparable, crucial, and too important to be taken out or removed. GA would be Bailey’s, take it or leave it, isn’t even that good but we all pretend to like it, for some reason we make ourselves do it way too early, and it makes your head hurt the next morning. My favorite committee was probably The Liverpool Ministries at ChoMUN. As Storekeeper of the Ordinance, I managed to lead an underground revolution, establish great infrastructure across England, become Prime Minister, take over Iceland, changed my name to Thor Skadir, and loosely structured my new empire after the Nordic kingdom shown in Disney’s Frozen.
Why Do You Love MUN: I really like combining my passions of international ~stuff~ and beating people in a competitive manner.
Vice Deputy of Crisis Training
Name: Yaj Dhawan
Year: First
Major(s): Computer Science Engineering
Minor(s): Data Analytics
Favorite MUN Conference: CMUNNY, and OSUMUN!!!
Favorite Committee: Crisis >> GA. That’s all I'm going to say. And my favorite experience was when I colluded with my main opposition bloc leader to establish a secret shadow organization that would control global events based on our personal agendas and then get killed at a fake marriage...
Why Do You Love MUN: MUN lets me bring out a side that most might not be able to see or understand and then allow me to do whatever I want in the role I am representing.
Deputy of GA Training
Name: Anya Chew
Year: Third
Major(s): Political Science; Security & Intelligence
Minor(s): German; Military History
Favorite MUN Conference: McMUN!
Favorite Committee: I’ve been a GA delegate forever, but since joining Ohio State’s MUN team I’ve had the opportunity to try out crisis. While I still prefer GA (sorry, Ian and Yaj), my favorite committee experience was definitely the JCC at BarMUN 2018 on the Iranian Hostage Crisis where I played a high-level Iranian official, conspired to overthrow the military, and assassinated President Jimmy Carter (it’s all love for 39 though!! I volunteer for Habitat too!).
Why Do You Love MUN: I’ve been doing MUN for ten(!) years now and I can’t imagine what my life would be like without it or without the people I’ve met because of it! It’s taught me the values of diplomacy, debate, and public speaking - and filled my brain with endless niche knowledge about various countries’ positions on insanely specific topics. At my first conference when I was tiny and eleven, I was told that Science Olympiad was for socially awkward nerds and that Model UN was for socially adept nerds. No offense to Science Olympiad kids but… we’re built different 😌.
Assistant Deputy of GA Training
Name: Naman Patel
Year: First
Major(s): International Relations & Diplomacy, French
Minor(s): Philosophy
Favorite MUN Conference: Definitely BARMUN
Favorite Committee: By far, General Assembly, but my favorite experience was participating in a GA about the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting and then successfully removing the United Kingdom from the Commonwealth.
Why Do You Love MUN: This list could go on for a while, but the biggest reason is because it allowed me to go from a shy, timid person who could barely speak English, to an outgoing, confident individual who is aware of global issues.
ShrunkMUNC Coordinator
Name: Eva Hu
Year: First
Major(s): International Relations & Diplomacy
Minor(s): Chinese, Global Public Health
Favorite MUN Conference: OSUMUN (go bucks!)
Favorite Committee: No favorites, but an interesting anecdote is that the first and only year I competed in MUN in high school the team that won Best Resolution resolved to send Syrian refugees to the moon because it was “neutral territory”. They refused to answer questions about pragmatism, funding, and whether or not they generally understood anything about the moon (and space travel).
Why Do You Love MUN: Everyone you meet is the most intelligent person in the room on one subject matter or another. It is so incredible to get to learn from so many different types of people about anything from generally common to extremely niche. ALSO, the dedicated female leaders of CCWA in particular are empowering, inspiring, and humbling role models.
MUN Finance Liaison
Name: Mateo Gutierrez
Year: First
Major(s): Economics, International Relations & Diplomacy
Minor(s): Chinese
Favorite MUN Conference: NCSC
Favorite Committee: I enjoy specialized committees that combine elements of GA and Crisis. My favorite conference experience was leaving a bloc who colluded to exclude me from author’s panel with my ideas and being able to get on authors panel on a different bloc.
Why Do You Love MUN: MUN allows me to learn more about the world while at the same time being incredibly entertaining. I am also able to practice public speaking skills and communicating effectively with people you don’t really know. It’s also great to bond with everyone at conferences.
